Qouthwest China comprises the three provinces of Sichuan, Guizhou and Yunnan, the Tibet DAutonomous Region and Chongqing Municipality directly under the Central Government.

The GuangxiZhuang Autonomous Region abuts Yunnan in the west and Guizhou in the northwest. As it is closely related with Southwest China in terms of geography and economy, Guangxi is treated as part of Southwest China in this pictorial.

This region possesses unique geographical conditions. The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, frequently called the Roof of the World, is home to the world’s highest peak Qomolangma. Itextends eastward like a ladder from the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau to the hilly areas and finally to the Sichuan Plain. There are numerous snow-covered mountains, plains, gorges, waterfalls, lakes and meadows. The Hengduan Mountains run north-south. Rivers here include the Yarlung Zangbo, Jinsha, Nujiang and Lancang. Such a unique topography creates natural conditions suitable for a diversity of plants that create a magical landscape in Southwest China. More than 10 world-class scenic spots here have been included in the World Heritage List. People of more than 20 ethnic groups have been living here for many generations, creating a rich array of unique ethnic customs. The beautiful and rich natural landscape of Southwest China attracts visitors from every corner of the world.
