On one side of the vacation palace of Qing emperors is the first provincial museum that was established in 1929.Originally known as the“Zhejiang West Lake Museum,”it did not get its present name until 1953.Located at the southern foot of Solitary Hill,this lakeside museum is next to Zhongshan Park.After its reconstruction in 1994,the new 20,400-square-meter museum has exhibition halls as Painting and Calligraphy Hall,Coin,Gift,and Souvenir Hall,and International Cultural Exchange Hall.

Lyu Xiaguang Memorial was set up in 1995 to show French Chinese collection of European oil paintings and moved into Zhejiang West Lake Gallery in 1999.West Lake Gallery which was completed in the autumn of 1999 is placed at the east side of the museum and where National Art Academy-China’s first institution of its kind-used to be.

Blessed with a calm lake in front and a green hill at the back,this lakeside museum has become a new cultural center in Hangzhou.
