Autumn Moon over the Calm Lake

1 min read

Situated at the west end of Bai Causeway and the south-east corner of Solitary Hill,Autumn Moon over the Calm Lake is an attractive lakeside scenic spot with pavilions, bridges, rockeries, terraces, trees, and flowers.Early in the Tang Dynasty, there was a building here known as Lake View Pavilion, but it was later replaced by Dragon King’s Temple. In 1699,Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty remodeled the temple into Imperial Book Pavilion.A terrace surrounded by water was built in front of it,which was one of the best places to look at the moon.

In 1919,a Jewish millionaire from the UK bought 4,000 square meters of land west ofImperial Book Pavilion. He built a private garden known as Luo’s Garden after his wife’s surname.Later, the garden was taken by the government, and became part of National Art College in 1928.The whole place was rebuilt into an Octagonal Pavilion,Quadrangle Hall, and Blue Sky Tower. Now it is a beautiful place all the year round.
