The Windmill Forest in Gobi

4 min read

“Rocks of Dabancheng are hard and flat, watermelon big and sweet, pigtails of Dabancheng girls are very long, and eyes are so beautiful. This is a folk song created by the “Western Singer King”Wang Luobin, and it was the song that made the small town known all over the world. To the local residents, they can hear about Dabancheng in the weather forecast everyday of “from the southern suburbs of Urumqi to Dabancheng area”to forecast the wind force.

Dabancheng, one of the famous wind zones in Xinjiang, is located at the vent of the Junggar Basin and the Turpan Basin, which is the air current channel between southern and northern Xinjiang, so the wind period lasts for more than 10 months a year, with the wind area of over 5,880 square kilometers, and the development potential of wind energy resources exceeds 10 million kw. Based on such advantaged wind energy resources, the largest wind energy base-Dabancheng wind power plant emerged at the right moment.

There is a spectacular windmill World along the road to Dabancheng, and the road management department even set an observation area. People travelling on the road would always pull up to admire such a fantastic view. With the fantastic and amazing background of Mount Bogda, contiguous groups of wind driven generators stand there tall and upright under the blue sky and white clouds, rotating in the wind. Although, the shape of these windmills cannot be compared to those dreamy Dutch windmills, it is also unforgettable to view these orderly windmills stubbornly standing there, and never stop moving.

In many literary works, the wind in northwestern China is bitter, sad, hard, and without a trace of tenderness. In the past, “drink the northwest wind”meant living in poverty without anything to eat or drink; but now people can really “drink” the northwest wind. Huge investment is being attracted by the blowing wind.

Xinjiang started to “drink northwest wind” long time ago.

As early as 1989, Xinjiang constructed a grid-connected wind farm with the installed capacity of more than100,00 kilowatts. In recent years, large number of central power groups have developed wind power projects in Xinjiang consecutively; and many large central enterprises have announced their entry into the wind power industry in Xinjiang.

Xinjiang has become the main battlefield for the wind power industry for central enterprises.

A local wind power enterprise in Xinjiang must be mentioned-Goldwind Science and Technology Co., Ltd, which was the first and currently the largest wind power technology and equipment research and manufacturing enterprise in China, the company also has a RD center and factories in Germany.

Many wind power enterprises, represented by the Goldwind Company, have witnessed the growth of the wind power industry in Xinjiang. After 20 years of development, Xinjiang has built many wind farms of different scales in five wind zones, with the installed capacity of more than 1.3 million kilowatts, wind power projects under construction of 650,000 kilowatts, and the approved 25 wind power projects of 1.25 million kilowatts.

In 2009, the Urumqi Economic and Technological Development Zone signed a strategic cooperation framework agreement with Dabancheng District to jointly build the”China Wind Valley”, and started building the largest experimental wind farm and demonstration wind farm of 50,000 kilowatts; In December, the maximum power wind generating set of 3 MW was successfully set and debugged to operate at the Dabancheng experimental wind farm. In August 2012, “China Wind Valley”Dabancheng gained 2.7 billion Yuan in the development of wind power.

Nature is so magical. In addition to wind, the sun also treats Xinjiang generously, especially Hami.

The air in Hami is dry with a good atmospheric transparency. The annual sunshine time is 3, 357.6 hours, which is hours 18 minutes per day, and the annual average solar radiation is of 6,041 6,691MJ/ square meter. Therefore Hami is one of the superior regions of light energy resource and an ideal area to build the national large-scale grid-connected PV power base Thus, the photovoltaic industry in Hami has made a luxuriant metamorphosis from “the largest in Xinjiang” to “the largest in China”, and finally to “the largest in the world”.

In 2010, Hami began to prepare the photovoltaic project planning, and officially began the construction of the photovoltaic power station in 2011. During the two years, 44 photovoltaic projects were launched, with total of720,000 kilowatts, accounting for one-third of that in Xinjiang. At present 25 famous domestic enterprises including five major power generation groups gather in the photovoltaic industrial zone of Shichengzi, Hami, and a complete photovoltaic industry chain has been formed.

In August 2012, Focusic(China)New Energy Holding Co., Ltd entered into the zone, with the most advanced concentration technology, Focusic can make the photoelectric conversion efficiency exceed 29%, and the company also adopts the advanced tracking mode to move the sunlight receiving apparatus following the sun like sunflowers, so the apparatus can be kept vertical with the sun to receive sunlight efficiently. The project will become the largest concentrating photovoltaic electric field in the world after being put into production.
