Regional Autonomy of Ethnic Groups

Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region applies the ethnic regional autonomy system under the leadership of the Central People’s Government in compliance with the Constitution of the People’s Republic of China. The People’s Congress of Guangxi and its Standing Committee and the People’s Government of Guangxi are organs of self-government, exercising autonomy in the areas of politics, economy, finance, culture and education Twelve autonomous counties have been established where people of ethnic minorities live in compact communities including six for the Yao, one apiece for the Miao, Dong, Mulao, Maonan and two for multi-ethnic groups.

Commemorating 50 years of regional autonomy

According to the Law on Regional Ethnic Autonomy, the chairperson of the Autonomous Region should be Zhuang citizen, and the governor of an autonomous county should come from its major ethnic group. Governments of the Autonomous Region and counties should, as far as possible, consist of qualified citizens of the major ethnic group and ethnic minorities.

Right of autonomy is more obviously reflected in local legislation. Since the Law on Regional Ethnic Autonomy came into force, autonomous area authorities at all levels have, in the light of local characteristics, promulgated and implemented over 20 regulations on autonomy and separate regulations, local statutes and regulations on ethnic issues that play significant roles in nomous areas economic, cultural and social development in autonomous areas.
