1 min read

The Hathpace Residence is a small Uyghur resident lane on high loess cliffs in the southeast of the old city of Kashgar, called “Kuoziqiyabeixi Lane”in the Uyghur language, meaning earthenware on the high cliffs. The existence of the cliffs as high as hundreds of meters in the old city of Kashgar dates back to as early as the Eastern Han period according to history. Legends have that Pan Chao and Geng Gong, famous generals of the Eastern Han Dynasty, once left their footprints here. During the Kala Han Kingdom, the middle gth century, the royal palace was built in the north of the high cliffs. The Hathpace Residence is the place for the local Uyghur people to live from generation to generation.

The houses are made of mud and cottonwood. After branches are removed, the cottonwood is not planed, but directly used for constructing and supporting the roof, loft and balcony. The Hathpace Residence is built on the clifs with craggy terrain. The population is intensive, and there are lots of the crisscrossed lanes extending in all directions. There are 603 households in total; the population of the residents is nearly 2,500. The whole street looks a little shabby, but it is said that the houses are very firm.A lot of houses have a history of hundreds or even thousands of years.
