Good fortune-Fu

“Fu”, the Chinese character for “good fotune”, means longevity, wealth, health,tranquility, and virtue. Sticking and hanging the Chinese character “(Fu)” is an important folk custom. In Chinese paintings the images of bats and Buddha’s hands (the Chinese characters for which are homophones, i. e. they share the same pronunciation)convey a “Fu” blessing, implying good luck.

Prosperity or emolument-Lu “Lu”, emolument or wealth, originally meant the official’s salary in feudal China.

Among folk people, it more often refers to all kinds of wealth, prosperity, fame and social status. People often use deer’s homophones to imply good fortune and wealth.

Longevity-—Shou

“Shou” means“longevity” that refers to praying for longer life. The character “Shou” has diverse structures and strokes, giving rise to the circulation of numerous scrolls consisting of a hundred forms of this character. In the reign of the Qing Emperor Kangxi, a huge blue-and-white porcelain vase was created, bearing 10,000 characters for the character “(longevity)” in different forms on its body. People are often blessed with a long life through such patterns as a peach.
