Xiangwang Park

2 min read

It is a theme park characterized by the Culture of Xiang Yu to reflect the long historical culture of Huzhou. Located at the north end of People’s Road on the southern bank of Longxi River, it covers an area about 25,000 square meters. According to the Historical Records of Wuxing, the ancient Huzhou city proper was divided into the inner city and the outer city. The Inner was called”Zicheng”, also known as Xiangwang City because of the Inner that was set up during the time of his rebellion against the QinEmperor. The Outer was called “Luocheng”. The city wall of the Outer was constructed along with the Longxi River. The city wall at first had nine gates, but it had only six city gates in the Song Dynasty. Among the gates, Fengsheng Gate(gate of victorious worship) on the north was the control of access to Tai Lake from Huzhou. It was said that Xiang Yu (232 B.C.-202B.C.) had done much before marching, and a lot of preparations and activities were finished in Huzhou. He recruited followers and trained them at Mount Bian by Tai Lake, even now some ruins and traces related to those military activities might be seen. It was just from the gate of Fengsheng that Xiang Yu and his men set out northwards to go on a punitive expedition of Qin. To commemorate the Hegemonic King in West Chu, Fengsheng Gate is also called Hegemony Gate by local inhabitants.

The construction of Xiangwang Park started on January 9,2009 and was completed on January 31,2010. It is built on the site near the gate of Fengsheng. When tourists get into the park,a high statue of the cavalier comes into one’s view first, which is positioned in front of the newly built wall gate.
