The site of the New Fourth Army in Jiangsu and Zhejiang

The former site of the New Fourth Army (N4A) of Jiangsu and Zhejiang(Su-Zhe) Military Region is the largest and perfectly preserved revolutionary site in South China. It was the base of the military commands, logistical services and supports of N4A. In fact, the now site of N4A of Su-Zhe Military Region has 14 former spots that come within the jurisdiction of it.

They are the Headquarters of the First Column Troop (N4A) of Su-Zhe Military Region in Wentang Village(museum); the Headquarters of Su-Zhe Area Command, and Marshal Su Yu’s Residence and Office in Yangfeng Village, the seats of the Anti-Japanese Democratic Government and the Communist Party Committee of Changxing County in Qiaoxia Village, the Residence for Commanders in Beishanyuan Village, the Government Office of South Jiangsu District in Shangyang Village, the Recuperation Clinic of the Base Hospital (N4A) in Maoshan Village, theBedding and Clothing Factory(N4A) in Hengling Village, the Shoe-making Factory in Dingjie Village(N4A), the Weapon Repair Plant in Shuiqu Village, the Newspaper Office of “South Jiangsu”in Chanling village, thePublic Studying House in Taiji Village, and the Editorial Department of Journal of Su-Zhe Military Region(N4A). Centered on the headquarters N4A, the whole site of N4A of Su-Zhe Military Region consists of the spots above and others that are scattered within the boundaries of Huaikan and Baixian in Changxing County. That is the junction of three provinces of Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Anhui.

The whole former site covers an approximate floor area of 9,000 square meters in all. The sites had been civilian residences before the New Fourth Army took them as the locations of the military organizations in the later stage of Anti-Japanese War from Autumn,1943 to October,1945. Most of the buildings on the sites are residential houses of the Late Qing Dynasty and the Early Republic of China. They witnessed the triumph over Japanese aggression. These former sites with the houses are listed among the key historical and cultural units under the national protection.
