The Picturesque East Lake

1 min read

The East Lake is on the east of Shaoxing. It has deep water and strange rock formation With an average depth of 18 meters, the lake is a blend of workmanship and nature.

Today, the hill around the East Lake covered with pine trees and bamboos has turned into a natural scene. There are two rock caves in the lake,Xiantao Cave(Fairy Peach Cave)and Taogong Cave(Duke Tao’s Cave),which appear to be a fairyland.Visitors can enter the caves by boat.

The Taogong Cave is like a natural source of water with towering stone walls.Light enters through narrow opening above.Xiantao Cave’s name is written in Chinese on a huge stone over the entrance. The cave has deep, clean, and cold water. The cave is divided into two by a stone wall about three feet thick with a huge round hole in the middle, through which a boat can pass.

Visitors who want a bird’s-eye view of Shaoxing and its canals can fasten their boat at Tingqui Pavilion and climb a hill.A new pavilion now stands at the foot of the hill, and stone steps lead to the top. This is a recent addition which has enhanced East Lake’s attraction. Here you can get a panorama of typical south China landscape. With crisscrossing water courses,mirror-like lakes and evergreen hills,Shaoxing is a land of endless fascination.
