Shaoxing-Venice of the East
1 min readSixty kilometers from Hangzhou on Hangzhou-Ningbo railway line is another tourist attraction of Zhe jiang-Shaoxing. About 12.7% of the total area is taken up by water. It is called”Venice of the East.”
A two hours’ bus ride between Hangzhou and Shaoxing makes tourists excited by the vivid greens, purples, and gold of the countryside.
People in Shaoxing are proud that the place is the home of the late Premier Zhou Enlai’s ancestors and the hometown of Lu Xun, China’s well-known man of letters in modern times. There is some beauty in Shaoxing. East Lake is something that local guides would highly recommend as a “must-see”item. Apart from some other scenic attractions, the city has a number of historical and cultural institutions: Lu Xun’s former residence and his memorial hall, Mausoleum of Yu the Great, Shen’s Garden, and Orchid Pavilion, etc. They have contributed to enriching the 2,500 years of the city’s history. No wonder Shaoxing has been cited as one of the 24 cities of great historical and cultural importance.
