STAIRWAY TO KNOWLEDGE

2 min read

Lying in the arms of the Tangjiawan Peninsula, on the northern section of the city’s Love Promenade, this bookstore is a world of the most beautiful, natural colors and oceanic light. The initial impression is so striking in fact, that it seems to, first, be a dream devised by the designer, and only then a bookstore. It is the city’s fairytale, a place that gratifies the senses but also urges the mind to wander and associate freely.

The minimalistic layout of the space draws one’s eyes toward the spines of the books, beckoning the visitor to roam mentally and land on the title they desire most. The thick, wooden reading tables provide generous space to enjoy the romantic mood lighting, and the broad windows let in a flood of natural light, allowing the mesmerizing view of the vast sea to cascade in. The lovely facility is completed by an inviting terrace where the wind from the wide-open spaces of the sea, refreshingly but gently, blows all those urban distractions away.

FOR THOSE WHO DON’T FEEL LIKE GOING HOME

Tied to the theme of “a library for urban nightcomer”, the bookstore is the Zhuhai version of the 10-episode Japanese live-action television drama Midnight Diner, providing locals with a round-the-clock refuge from the break-neck urbanity beyond its doors. Walking into the homey place located on South Fenghuang Road in downtown Zhuhai, one is welcomed by a poster of the TV drama and tempted to read till daybreak. Don’t worry. You won’t feel lonely here. The city is never short of nightbirds and a loyal night reading contingency.

SHU SHENG GUAN HI CITY

AL FRESCO AND MUSICAL

Atrendy venue sited in one of the city’s most stylish architectural landmarks on Yeli Island, it is a”musical bookstore” where you may find the vinyl LP you’ve just been dying to lay your fingers on. The 1,000-square-meter sprawl provides a wonderful children-and-parent zone stuffed full of kids’books and craft stations. The design works to blur the division between indoor spaces and outdoor to create an “al fresco” feel for readers.
