The oldest kariz was found near the ruins of an ancient city at the western dam end of Shengjinkou Reservoir in the Flaming Mountain. There were a number of ancient tombs in the east of the ruins and two earthen jars and one earthen bowl were once excavated near the reservoir. According to an appraisal, they are the relics of the Wei and Jin Dynasties (220-420). This kariz is about 100 long with about only 30m from the ancient tombs to its outlet; the ancient well has 7 vertical wells which is about 10m from each other. At present it has dried up and one section at the outlet has collapsed into open channels. There is no cultivated land around the ancient well but only an ancient city. According to analysis, it is a kariz built by digging with the use ofsupplying domestic water for the ancient city. It is the ruins of the oldest kariz found in Turpan so far, which is about 1,500 years from the current time.
