The palace is 3 700m above the sea level,covering an area of over 360 000m2 with an interior space of more than 130 000m2,about 360m long from east to west,and the 13-story main tower is 117m high.It is compre-hensive with halls,stupas,Buddlhist chambers,chapels,monk dormitories,and courtyards,a palace complex largest and highest in the world reputed as“pearl on the world roof”.

Potala Palace is the winter palace of the Dalai Lamas of all times,and the governing center of the former rulers of Tibet,both political and reli-gious.Since the 5th Dalai Lama,all important religious and political ceremo-nies were held here.Kept in the palace are the imperial edicts of entitlement by emperors of Ming and Qing Dynasties,seals,gold album and iade al-bum,handicrafts,sutras,and all kinds of book,as well as the funerary stupa of the deceased Dalai Lamas.

Potala Palace is the masterpiece of Tibetan buildings and the gem of ancient Chinese architecture.The palace integrates with the hil,standing aloft with grandeur and maiesty.The walls alternating in red and white,the golden roois shining with brillance,it demonstrates in fll the appealing charm of ancient Tibetan buildings.It is not only the symbol of the creativity of Tibetan people,but also the unique cultural heritage of human beings on this high and snowy plateau.

In 1994.UNESCO inscribed it in World Heritage List as a cultural herit-age.
