And with the nearby Mutianyu Great Wall and other historical and cultural attractions, aswell as a large production of apple, apricot, and chestnut, Zhuanghu Village enjoyed an advantagein developing folk-custom tourism. In 1998, three local households piloted the new tourismprogram. Seeing their success and growing fortunes, other villagers followed suit. By the end of2006, 30 tourist—accommodating households hosted 12,000 visitors and were generating morethan 600,000 yuan a year.

In 2007, Zhuanghu was designated as one of the pilot villages inHuairou District in the construction of new countryside.
