Copper forging, commonly known as copper hammering, is a common manual processing technique in Tibet. The craftsmen process copper sheet into needed shapes or decoration patterns by forging andhammering. The manufactured objects can be seen everywhere, from decorations on palaces’ golden roofs to wine cups or rings. By function, forged copper sculptures can be classified into architectural ornaments, deity statues, Buddhist instruments, ritual vessels, tableware, and others.

Today, Tibetan forging techniques still adopt the ancient methods and style of the practice prevalent in the Central Plains of the Tang Dynasty.

The golden roofs of many common monasteries and classic architecture are usually huge stereoscopic forged copper sculptures.

Partially, there are delicately forged copper sculpture artworks, such as the numerous forged copper pillar columns, prayer wheels, and a mysterious songbird with a human head and bird’s body among others.

Generally, they are completely gilded, and look sparkling and incomparably glorious under the blue sky. There are golden forged copper talismans or adornments embedded in the essential parts of the purple wall. The large main Buddha statues in the monasteries are stereoscopic forged copper sculptures instead of cast ones.
