Flat soft masks

1 min read

These masks used in Tibetan operas have unique characteristics and boast various styles. Generally they were made of leather, woolen cloth or lint. To make a white mask, three holes were made on fur as eyes andmouth. Then a carrot-shaped nose or flake nose was hung between the eyes.A blue mask has exaggerated modeling, extraordinarily beautifuladornment, exquisite drawing and gorgeous color. The major difference between white and blue masks is the difference in grounding.

The queen or heroine’s mother usually wears a small green mask.

Green represents beauty and kindness, tenderness and tractability, inclusiveness and wisdom. The mask is very small, worn on one corner of the forehead, producing a mysterious and magical feeling. The face undera mask reveals the human relationships with the simplest and most real expressions.

The male immortals, hermits or Lamas wear a yellow mask with white beard. Yellow represents holiness, knowledge and virtue, and it became asymbol of the Ge Lug Pa, which was a Tibetan Buddhism sect that played a dominant role in the Tibetan religion later.
