Colorful and Diverse Costume

Unique landforms traditions and customs have created colorful and magnificent costume cultures among the various ethnic groups of Guangxi. The beliefs reflected in its profound connotations and by its special motifs constitute a valuable element of Chinese costume culture.

Zhuang costume is ordinarily made of home-woven cloth. The Zhuang people in Napo County, Baise, revere the color black and like wearing it. Zhuang brocade, a masterpiece and precious category of Zhuang textile art, is a fabric with colorful motifs woven with cotton yarn and velvet.

Zhuang Brocade and the silkwoven- Song Brocade( produced in Suzhou), Shu Brocade (Sichuan) and Yun Brocade Nanjing) are together known as China’s four famous brocades.

Zhuang Brocade, with its special ethnic style and bright handicraft features, is usually used for women’s kerchiefs, pleated skirts, waist decoration and shoes as well as for quilt covers and bags.

The Yao people are skilled in fabric dyeing and embroidery and have developed a complete technology for indigo dyeing. Their costumes are all made of home-dyed cloth and there are big differences in costume between the various braches of the Yao. All, however, are characterized by distinctive headdresses in a range of forms including dragon-, swallow-or A-shaped headwear.

When dancing, Miao women like to wear batik-died black pleated skirts.

Other ethnic groups in Guangxi also have distinctive costumes.
