Aiwowo,Steamed Rice Cakes with Sweet Stuffing

Aiwowo is a type of Beijing traditional Muslim snack.There was a poem going like this,”Put white glutinous rice into the steamer,roll the assorted stuffing with flour.The very image of intact rice dumpling,they call it Aiwowo.” Aiwowo is featured by pure white color like snow,soft and glutinous taste and sweet stuffings.

How Aiwowo comes?The origin of Aiwowo comes from an interesting story. It’s said that in Ming Dynasty,there lived the queen and many concubines in the Palace of Gathering Excellence in the Imperial Palace.They ate delicacies and cusines every day so they were fed up with food no matter how precious it was. One day,there was a Muslim chef who took some home food called Aiwowo to the royal kitchen.One of the maids saw the chef eating something she never saw before. She grabbed it for curiosity and had a bite.To her surprise,she found it so delicious and took Aiwowo to the queen for a try.The queen appreciated it too after having a taste and ordered the chef to do more Aiwowo for other concubines in the Palace of Gathering Excellence at once.

Since then,Aiwowo was spread to the folk and worth a hundred times with high reputation.It has become a famous Muslim snack called”Royal Aiwowo”.
