Grain crops in Xinjiang

Xinjiang is an important grain producing base in northwestern China and its grain production plays an important role in Xin jiang agriculture and even in the whole national economy. The main grain crops of Xinjiang include wheat, corn and paddy.

In 2011, the sowing area of various grain crops in Xin jiang is of 2,004,000 hectares and the total production volume is 12,007,500 tons, accounting for 2.1% of the country’s total grain output and ranking 17th in China; grain per capita is 558 kilograms, ranking 6th in China. Xinjiang has various and complete grain crops, among which wheat, corn and beans are the main food crops. In 2011, the cultivated area of wheat is 1,078 million hectares with a yield of 5,766,400 tons, accounting for 4.9% of the national total production and ranking 6th in China; the cultivated area of corn is 728,000 hectares with a yield of 5,176,700 tons, accounting for 2.7% of the national total production and ranking 12th in China; the cultivated area of beans is 84,300 hectares with a yield of 291,100 tons, accounting for 1.5% of the national total production and ranking 18th in China; moreover, the production of rice is 606,400 tons and the production of tuber crops is 240,000 tons.

As the reserve base for national food supply, Xin jiang constantly optimizes the structure of grain cultivation, increases the production proportion of high-quality wheatand accelerates the production development of high-quality wheat and special grain; focus on the development of wheat, corn and forage maize production in Changji, Ili, Tacheng, Altai, and Bortala in Northern Xinjiang and Mongolian Autonomous Prefecture of Bayingolin, Aksu, Kashgar Prefecture and Hotan in Southern Xin jiang, the beans production such as colored kidney bean and chickpea in the cold and cool areas, Baicheng City and Wushi County of the five prefectures in Northern Xinjiang, and the advantageous beer barley production in Changji Hui Autonomous Prefecture, Ili Kazak Autonomous Prefecture, and Kumul Prefecture in Northern Xin jiang.

Quality wheat planting regions mainly are:44 counties(cities), including Gongliu County, Nilka County, Qapqal County, Mulei County, Qitai County, Fukang City, Changji City, Barkol County, Yining County, Xinyuan County, Zhaosu County, Turks County, Huocheng County, Tacheng City, Emin County, Shawan County, Wusu City, Wenquan County, Qinghe County in Northern Xin jiang; and Luntai County, Yanqi County, Kuqa County, Shaya County. Xinhe County, Baicheng County, Awat County, Aksu City, Wensu County, Kashgar, Shule County, Shufu County, Yuepuhu County, Jiashi County, Bachu County, Markit County, Shache County, Zepu County, Yecheng County, Akto County, Hotan County, Moyu County, Pishan County, Luopu County and Zeller County in Southern Xin jiang.

Planting areas of summer maize: mainly include 25 counties, namely, Hotan County, Keriya County, Luopu County, Moyu County, Pishan County, Aketao County, Bachu County, Jiashi County, Shule County, Yengisar County, Shufu County, Shache County, Markit County.

Yecheng County, Wushi County, Wensu County, Xinhe County, Shaya County, Awat County, Kuqa County, Yanqi County, Luntai County, Huocheng County, Yining County and Qapqal County in Hotan Prefecture, Kashgar Prefecture, Aksu Prefecture, Bayingolin Prefecture and lli Prefecture.

Advantageous areas of spring maize: mainly include 21 counties (cities), namely, Gongliu County, Xinyuan County, Nilka County, Qapqal County, Wenquan County, Bole City, Changji City, Hutubi County, Jimsar County, Qitai County, Mulei County, Baicheng, Yecheng

Advantageous paddy growing areas: mainly include Wensu County, Qapqal County and Midong District.
