Wind resource in xinjiang

6 min read

Xinjiang has abundant wind energy resources; the total reserves of wind energy resource is 870 million kW, and the technical development amount 120 million kW, about78,000km² with annual average wind power density=150 W/m2and annual effective wind energy 10,800 M.J/m2Xinjiang is one of the provinces and regions with the most abundant wind resources in China, therefore it is very promising for the development and utilization of wind energy resources.

The wind energy resources in Xinjiang are very considerable, where three great mountains and two big basins are the principal elements for generation of wind zones.Besides, because Xinjiang is located in the middle latitude, there are lots of cold front with more low pressure passing through, which increases the pressure gap along the south to north direction or the east to west direction, and then in some places where the air is unblocked, such as canyon, valley and mountain mouth, the airflow line becomes more intense and the wind speed enhance as well as the wind resources abundant. In Xin jiangthere is no wind in winter; and in summer, there is wind but not much, mostly gusts; while in spring, it is windy season. Northwest wind and west wind prevails in Northern Xin jiangand the south of Southern Xin jiang; and the east wind and northeast wind prevails in theeast of Southern Xin jiang; while east wind and southeast wind prevails in other regions. The annual average wind speed is that in Northern Xin jiang, it is 2.5~3.5 m/s; while in the west of Peacock River,1.5~2.5 m/s, and in the east of Peacock River, above 3 m/s; then inEastern Xinjiang,4~5 m/s. The annual wind energy density in Xinjiang is above 260 kW/m2and the total wind energy reserves is over 900 billion kW. But the distribution of wind energy resources in Xinjiang is very uneven, and is influenced by topography; the windenergy area distributes in unconnected islands shape. And the seasonal change of wind speed is large. Most places have gales in spring with an effective wind energy density accounting for 35%~45% of the whole year, while in summer and winter, only accounting for 5%~15%. Therefore, in most regions, the wind energy utilization value of every month in winter is not so big.

The wind energy of Xin jiang mainly concentrates on the nine wind zones in Xinjiang, including the Urumqi-Dabancheng Wind Zone, Alataw Pass Wind Zone, Shisan jianfang Wind Zone, Xiaocaohu Wind Zone in Turpan, Irtysh River Valley Wind Zone, Tacheng Old Wind Gap Wind Zone, Santanghu-Naomaohu Wind Zone, southeast wind zone in Kumul and Lop Nor Wind Zone. The features of the nine wind zones: big wind power density with all the annual average wind power density over 150 W/m; if the wind regime is ideal, the hours of keeping an effective wind speed could be even over 5,500, with the excellent conditions to build large wind power farms.

Urumqi-Dabancheng Wind Zone covers an area of 1,938km2 with the wind energy reserves of 5,250,000kW and technical development capacity of 4,120,000 kW. This area isclose to Urumqi and along the Lan-Xin Railway, making it the one with the most promising and development value, which belongs to a sub rich area and rich area of wind energy resources. At present, the wind power farms are mainly located within wind zones, including Dabancheng Wind Power Farm I and II with the best wind regime. DabanchengWind Zone is located in the valley between Tianshan Mountains and Eastern Tianshan Mountains, originating from Wulapo in the south suburb of Urumqi to the northwest, extending to Dabancheng Mountain mouth to the southeast, and Bogda Mountain on the northeast. The valley is about 80km long and 20km wide, as the channel of convection ofhot and cold air of Southern Xin jiang and Northern Xinjiang. When the air pressure in Northern Xin jiang is higher than that in Southern Xin jiang, the northwest wind prevails in the valley; when Southern Xin jiang air pressure is higher than that in Northern Xinjiang, the southeast wind prevails. The effective wind energy density is 1,500~3,000 kW/m².

Alataw Pass Wind Zone covers an area of 3,311km2 with the wind energy reserves of 9590,000kWand technical development capacity of 7,530,000 kW. This wind zone is located in Wulangkule Valley between Mount Baerluke and Mount Alatao, about 100km long and about 30km wide, with annual effective wind energy density up to 2,000~3,600 kW/m², which is a place with the richest wind energy in the whole Xin jiang. Because the mountain pass widens from the northwest to the southeast, the available average wind energy per unit area reduces from the northwest to the southeast. In the east of Tuotuo Town, Jinghe County, the wind energy reduces greatly, which has little value of utilization.

Shisanjianfang Wind Zone covers an area of 5,905km2 with the wind energy reserves of 13,390,000kW and technical development capacity of 10,510,000 kW. This wind zone is located along the LanXin Railway about 100km from Yuliaodun to Shisanjianfang with the annual wind energy density of 1,000~1,600 kW/m2, which is the sub-rich area of wind energy resources. All the big and small stations along the railway are lack of power supply equipments, so it has great significance to take advantage of wind energy power generation for the illumination of stations along the railway.

Xiaocaohu Wind Zone in Turpan covers an area of 892km-with the wind energy reserves of 2,550,000 kW and technical development capacity of 2 million kW. This wind zone includes areas from Hougou in the northwest of Turpan to the “Thirty Li Wind Zone”of the Three Spings, and the areas from Aspen Ditch to the Toksun Wind Zone and the Aydingkol Lake Wind Zone in the south of Turpan, with the annual effective wind energy density over 1,500~3,000kW/m2and the effective wind energy density between summer and spring up to 6,000~9,000 kW/m2, belong to the rich area of wind energy resources.

Irtysh River Valley Wind Zone covers an area of 4,276km-with the wind energy reserves of 8,090,000 kW and technical development capacity of 6,350,000 kW. The wind zone includes Habahe, Burqin, Jeminay and Heishantou and other places, mainly located in the low places 1,000 meters below sea level along the valley, with annual effective wind energy density of 1,000~1,500kW/m, belonging to the sub rich area of wind energy resources.

Tacheng Old Wind Gap Wind Zone covers an area of 4,014km2 with the wind energy reserves of 10,750,000 kW and technical development capacity of 8,440,000 kW. This wind zone is located in the western mountainous area of Junggar, originating from Hoboksar to the north and extending to Karamay and Toli Old Wind Gap to the south, with annual wind energy density of 1,000~1,500kW/m2,belonging to the sub rich area of wind energy resources.

Santanghu-Naomaohu Wind Zone and Gobiwind zone in the south and north of Kumul, located in the south and north side of Eastern Tianshan Mountains, connected with HexiCorridor, covers an area of 34,007km2with the annual effective wind energy density of1,000~2,500kW/ m2 and wind energy reserves 62,390,000 kW and technical development capacity of 48,970,000kW,belonging to the rich area of wind energy resources.

The southeastern wind zone in Kumul covers an area of 11,657km-with the wind energy reserves of 20,400,000 kW and technical development capacity of 16,010,000kW.

Lop Nor Wind Zone covers an area of 11,708km2 with the wind energy reserves of 20,490kW and technical development capacity of 16,080,000kW.

The wind energy resource in Xin jiang is abundant and excellent with large development value and potential which owns a bright future in the long run.It is far-reaching significant to develop wind energy resources and develop clean wind energy power generation. In recent years, the accelerating construction of wind power farms has pushed the development of wind power equipment manufacturing in Xin jiang.A batch of wind power energy equipment enterprises(represented by Xin jiang Goldwind Sci&Tech Co,Ltd)have taken the advantageous opportunities to develop rapidly. The wind power equipment manufacturing enterprises value the independent innovation and stick to scientific development leading to rapid market competitiveness improvement.Xin jiang is stepping forward to the strategic goal of national-level wind power equipment manufacturing base.
