Wuzhizhou Island is also called Guqizhou Island and Niuqizhou Island by the local people. The two names are both from a legend. It is said that long long ago, there was a river in Sanya called Tengqiao River. The people who lived at the upper side of the river damaged the vegetation. And when the flooding happened, the water poured down from the mountain and rushed together with the soil into the sea and made the clear sea water dirty. The Dragon King was very angry about it, so he reported to the Jade Emperor. The Emperor cut the edges of Ninnan Mountain, which was 7 kilometers away, with a magic sword, and ordered two bulls to push the edges to block the river mouth. But, out of expectation, the secret action was discovered by a local guy, and he shouted,”Look, how strange it is, two bulls are pulling mountain.”Then, the two bulls could not move any further. The mountain turned into island and the two bulls turned into two big stones, and the local people call the two stones Sister Stones. After the establishment of Sanya City, Hainan Province, the government verifies the names as the local fishermen provide a way of saying that the island is very much like a product called “centipede branch”, which is a kind of marine life. Then the island has its name to be Wuzhizhou Island, which is still in use today.

The earliest record of Wuzhizhou Island was in the Qing Dynasty.A Taoist called Wu Huacun was in search of a place for self-cultivation. When he saw the beautiful scenery and tribal of Wuzhizhou Island, he wanted to settle down here. The matter was then known by the local official, so he had a visit. Seeing the senic scenery of the island, he thought that this treasure should not be owned by individuals. Instead, it should be the benefit of its people. So he stopped Wu’s behavior, and built a construction. The God in the temple was Cangjie, the inventor of Chinese characters at first. After Qing government’s failure, people changed the god, and now the god in the temple is Mazu, the sea goddness. This is rare in the history of China, and it also leaves a great legacy in Hainan.
