Warp -width- Counting Stitch of Miao

1 min read

Warp-width counting stitch is a widely used technique among the Miao embroidery works as almost all the sub-branches of Miao people use this technique, which is noted for geometric patterns and symmetry.

It needs the homespun cloth with clear horizontal and vertical fines so as to calculate the accurate fines for embroidering. The work begins from reverse side and the pattern effects are shown on the surface. Warp-width counting stitch has no fixed patterns and the embroiderer has the right for creation at random and this is the reason why there are no identical works.

However there are several basic pattern units and through different grouping there can be different general patterns of the embroidery piece. There is one special model piece, which has many of the basic pattern units, and it is like a textbook of embroidery and can be used as guidance of stitches. There are less good quality patterns, so they are extremely precious.
