3 min readAccording to historical records, Gaobeidian Village came into being during the Liao Dynasty.
Now covering an area of 2.7 square kilometers, Gaobeidian is the an-cient village closest to the urban district of Beijing. Here folk custom tourist attractions include the site of Pingjin Water Transport Dock, Classical Furniture Street, Chinese National Culture Park, International Folk Custom Tourist Zone, and Yun He Chun Theater.
On April 8, 2005, international folk custom tourism was formally launched in Gaobeidian Tourism and Culture Village. Since the implementation of the policy of expanding the economy through tourism, the village has worked to take advantage of its cultural deposit, spread folk customs while conserving traditional culture, and actively carried out the municipal guideline of constructing a new countryside. Based on its own resources, the village has hosted campaigns aiming to revive the traditional festivals of Beijing, held water transport fairs to resume the historical boom of the ancient dock, and improved the environment and management of the Classical Furniture Street. It has also established the Chinese National Culture Park,inviting tourists to enjoy and participate in the protection of intangible cultural heritages; established the International Folk Custom Tourist Zone; and constructed the Yun He Chun Theater for tourists to enjoytraditional Chinese arts.
Pingjin Water Transport Dock Site: Located by the Tonghui River north of the village,in 1291 the dock was constructed by water—conservancy official Guo Shoujing. Historically,it served for the water transport of officials and goods from south to Beijing. The site is comparably well-preserved today.
Classical Furniture Street: Stretching 1,500 meters in the heart of the village, the furniture street is home to more than 300 businesses selling and repain’ng antique furniture dating to the Ming and Qing Dynasties, producing traditional hardwood furniture, and handling such commodities as antiques, stoneware, and root carvings. In September 2005,the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Commerce designated the street as a Feature Commercial Street, Chinese National Culture Park: Covering an area of 40,000 square meters in the southern part of the village, it is a garden—like building of the Ming and Qing style, home to nearly 100 stores and workshops. Most of the businesses specialize in on—the—spot production and exhibition of the works by folk art masters named by the United Nations and the state,while the rest sell classical furniture, antiques, paintings, calligraphy, and jade ware.
International Folk Custom Tourist Zone: According to the joint plan of the municipal and the district tourism administrations, some homes of local villagers were restructured to offer accommodations to the public, so that tourists here can truly experience the genuine countryside lifestyle by sampling the local food. staying at the villagers’homes, and participating in various folk cultural and recreational activities.
Yun He Chun Theater: The theater is located inside the Central Park of the Village, opposite to the Classical Furniture Street. The performance hall on the second floor, spanning 2,500 square meters, can accommodate 300 audiences. A corner of the memorial archway.
Here, over a cup of tea or a local—flavored meal, visitors can enjoy classical dances, folk operas, kung fu, aerobatics, and other traditional arts of Beijing.
