2 min read

The Development of the Great Wall-the Walls from the Eastern Han Dynasty to Jin Dynasty.

In the first year of Jianwu reign,Emperor Guangwu,Liu Xiu,fought wars from the east to the west to destroy the forces of the many treacherous generals and the anti-Han forces, therefore he had no time and energy to pay attention to the situation in the north and the appearance of the various hidden troubles, yet the troops sent to fight with the Xiongnu troops also were defeated again and again. Therefore, the Xiongnu people were even more savage, killing and plundering the Han people at will.Facing the domestic unrest and foreign invasion,EmperorGuangwu was extremely anxious, therefore he sent generals to recruit soldiersto develop“agricultural colonies”in Jinyang,Guang-◆Emperor Guangwu of the wu,Changshan(Zhiyuan-Han dynasty,Liu Xiu shi, the northwest of the present-day Yuanshi in Hebei Province), Zhuojun Prefecture (thepresent-day Zhuoxian County in Hebei prov-ince) and Yuyang so as to prepare to defend the invasion of the Xiongnu troops. In the 12th year of Jianwu reign(in 36 AD), the central plains area was largely pacified, and Emperor Guangwu also had the energy to turn his attention to the north at last. He began todedicate himself to the development of the north.

In order to protect the capital Luoyang and defend against the harassing of the Xiongnu troops, Emperor Guangwu ordered to build four Great Walls in the 14th year of Jianwu reign(in 38 AD): one was located between Lishi county in Shanxi province and the southeast of Xianyang in Shaanxi province; the second one was situated between the present-day Gaoling county in Shaanxi province and Anyi county in Shanxi province; the third one was located between the present-day Taiyuan in Shanxi province and Jingjing county in Hebei province; and the fourth one was situated between the south of the present-day Dingzhou city and Linzhang county in Hebei province.

However, the walls constructed in the Eastern Han dynasty(25-220) were largely buried in the history, and no vestige or relic sites have been found, therefore till today the archaeologists still haven’t found and proved the existence of them.
