The Summer Palace,which was called the Garden of Clear Ripples(Qingyiyuan)before,built in 1750 and smashed by the British and French armed forces in 1860,is located on the northwest part of Beijing.This imperial garden is the best preservedin the world and the largest still in existence in China nowadays.The Summer Palace has a total area of more than 290 hectares.The Longevity Hill covers one fourth of the 290 hectares while the Kunming Lake covers the rest part.There are so many halls in Renshou which was used as Emperor Guangxu and Empress Dowager Cixi’s office,they handled state affairs here when they were in the Summer Palace.It was listed as the World Cultural Heritage by the World Cultural Heritage Committee of UNESCO on November 30th 1998.
