Toward the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty China was war-stricken. Rival warlords viciously fought for the throne until three states finally came into being. Cao Cao founded Wei State in northern China, while his rivals Liu Bei and Sun Quan set up Shu State and Wu state respectively in the southwest and southeast of China. The novel touched on the widespread belief that “the world evolves in unification-splitting-reunification cycles”. The characteristics of those heroes, such as Zhuge Liang’s resourcefulness,Guan Yu’s loyalty, and Zhang Fei’s intrepidity, are lively representations of the Chinese nation’s noble-minded sentiment.
