Predominant Imperial Kiln Workshop on Jingdezhen

2 min read

Official kilns, in contrast to the civilian kilns, refer to the official kilns which exclusively produce porcelain for the court. Their long recorded history can be traced back tothe Song dynasty,i.e. the Official kilns of the Northern and Southern Song dynasties, but neither was located at Jingdezhen.

The Yuan dynasty highly adored white and had a special interest on bluish-white porcelain produced by Jingdezhen, so they set up the Fuliang Porcelain Bureau to manage porcelain firing for the court.

After the establishment of the Ming dynasty, the Imperial Kiln Workshop was set up so as to show the supreme imperial power and to satisfy the court demands for porcelain. The coexistence of varied kiln types since the Song dynasty came to an end,and was replaced by the predominance of Jingdezhen. The Qing porcelain system inherited that of Ming, and, based on that, made further development.

The imperial kiln workshop of Ming and Qing was located in Zhushan at the city proper of Jingdezhen. Now,the place presents beautiful landscape and is scattered with abundant porcelain sites dated to the Ming and Qing era, which remind us of the large scale of the Imperial KilnWorkshop. It was also the place where the most excellent porcelain craftsmen and top porcelain techniques gathered, and the most exquisite types of porcelain wares of the country were produced. It can be said without fear of brag that it was due to the Imperial Kiln Workshop that led to a prosperous porcelain industry in that time, the Workshop represents the highest level of porcelain firing in both Ming and Qing.
