Porcelain in Tang Dynasty

The Tang Dynasty was a time of unprecedented development-polifi-cal,economic,and cultural-for the Chinese feudal society,and the porcelain industry was no exception.During this period,China began to export porcelain to foreign markets.Different porcelain kilns producing various styles appeared,such as the Yue Kiln of Yuezhou(present-day Neiqiu,Hebei Province).The practice of naming kilns after their locations lasted into the Song,Yuan,and succeeding dynasties.

Porcelain in Song and Yuan Dynasty

During the Song and Yuan dynasties porcelain was made at Jingdezhen and other kiln sites in southern China using crushed and refined China stone alone,but by the early eighteenth century China clay was be-ing added to the China stone,in about equal proportions.Porcelain bodiesmade from China stone fire at a lower temperature,in the region of 1 200 degrees Celsius,than those made with a mixture of China clay and China stone,which require firing in the region of 1 350 degrees Celsius. Chinaclay when added to the body material produced a porcelain of great whiteness and of great strength.Whiteness,in particular,was a much sought after property of porcelain,especially that used for blue and white wares.

Porcelain in Ming and Qing Dynasty

The Ming and the Qing Dynasties saw another peak period in China’s ceramic development.With the development of social economy and foreign trade,pottery and porcelain had become an important source of revenue for the state government.Ceramic technology improved further,giving rise to new achievements in this field including“sweet white glaze”in the Yongle period,“cloisonne”in the Xuande period,and“three plain colors”in the Zhengde period.Among them,the boccaro teapot of Zhengde period kept its prominence for the subsequent 500 years.

In the Qing Dynasty imitation of the famous porcelain in the previous dynasties became a fashion;on the other hand,some new types of painted procelain were created,for example,the five-colored porcelain and enamel color in the Kangxi period,and the pink-colored porcelain originating in the Kangxi period and mature in the Yongzheng period.Masterpieces of that period greatly enhanced the artistic value of ceramics and gave full expression to the outstanding achievements of the Qing Dynasty’s ceramic technology.
