1 min read

Literati’s Dress in the Period of Wei, Jin and Southern & Northern Dynasties Dress is a symbol of social vogue. In a certain period, varied ideologies, habits and customs may be shown to some extent in the styles, materials, colors of dress. In the Wei, Jin and Southern & Northern dynasties, the dress style for emperors, ministers and royal families, whether at special occasion or at ordinary times, all followed that in the Qin and Han dynasties, but the literati’s dress comparatively altered a lot due to the social background at that time.

In the Wei, Jin and Southern & Northern dynasties, the literati were indifferent to fame or gain, and they upheld freedom in mentality. Under the influence of the politics, ideology of Chinese metaphysics and changes to the scholars’ economic status, the literati rushed to wear large, loose and simple dress, which showed that the trend of pursuing for peace had replaced the former militant trend, and that due to political unrest, social turmoil, and the suffering of people during this period, most of literati became disappointed with politics and began to seek for pleasure.
