International Labour Day

1 min read

International Labour Day, also known as just Labour Day in some countries, is a celebration of labourers and the working classes that is promoted by the international labour movement, socialists and communists and falls on May 1st each year. It is a world-wide common holiday for working people. While it is truly an international day, its celebration in China is probably one of the largest in the world.

This celebration has existed for generations and millions of Chinese people celebrate it. It is often referred sition to as May Day, due to its position on the calendar. It is also one of the peak periods for travel within the country, and trains and buses are packed with travellers. Unlike many other celebrations in China, May Day is a very simple holiday without any special foods or special costumes or traditional clothing. It is simply a period of rest for workers throughout the country. People use this time to visit relatives, tour historic sites, or simply relax at their homes with their families. It originated with the Chicago City Workers Strike (1886) for the right to work 8 hours a day, also known as the Haymarket Affair.
