Huang He —Mother River of the Chinese

2.2.1General Information Huang He is originated in Bayan Har Shan and Yagradae Shan in Qinghai,Tibetan Plateau, draining into Bo Hai,with a length of 5,464 km and an area of 752,443 square km.

Huang He,or the Yellow River;is the second largest riverin China. It flows through Qinghai,Sichuan,Gansu,Ningxia,Inner Mongolia,Shaanxi,Shanxi,Henan and Shandong. Its major tributaries are:Fen He ,Wei He ,Wuding He.The river reaches its highest levels in August because of summer rains and its flooding occurs because of sudden summer showers. The gradient changes sharply when it reaches the North China Plain so this shift causes the river to deposit large amounts of silt and overflow its bank.

The Yellow River is called the”Mother River of China”and”the Cradle of Chinese Civilization”in China,as its basin is the birth-place of the northern Chinese civilizations and the most prosperous region in early Chinese history.

Early Chinese literature refers to the Yellow River simply as“River”(He).The first appearance of the name“Yellow River” was in the Book of Han written in the Western Han dynasty(206 BC-9AD).

The name”Yellow River”describes the perennial ochre-yellow color of the muddy water in the lower course of the river.

The yellow deposits are also known as loess. So the Loess Plateau is one of the Four Plateaus in China, the other three being Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau,Inner Mongolian Plateau,Yunnan-Guizhong Plateau.

Sometimes the Yellow River is poetically called the”Muddy Flow”.So the Chinese expression”When the Yellow River flows clear”is similar to the English expression”When hell freezes over”,which means“”Never”.

History and Culture During the long history of China, the Yellow River has been considered a blessing as well as a course and has been nicknamed both”China’s Pride”.Records indicate that, from 602 BC to the present, the river’s course made at least 5 major large-scale changes in direction and its levees were breached more than 1,500 times.A major course change in 1194 took over the Huai River drainage system throughout the next 700 years. The mud in the Yellow River literally blocked themouth of the Huai River and left thousands homeless. The Yellow River adopted its present course in 1897 after the latest course change occurred in 1855.

Some of the known flood defenses used in ancient times were the building of ditches, walls(dams),levees, and rebound channels to route floodwaters around a blockage. The main problem was that the solutions were local and sometimesthe dams were too small and weak for the impact. If the river broke down the defenses,it would cause far more damage than if no levees had been built.

The Route Huang He travels The river is commonly divided into three stages:the Upper Reaches, the Middle Reaches, the Lower Reaches.

The Tributaries of the Yellow River , White River , Black River , Huang Rive r , Zuli River , Qingshui River , Dahei River , Kuye River , Wuding River , Fen River Wei River , Luo River , Qin River , Dawen River , Yongding River .
