The Travel Department seceded from the bank in June, 1927 and renamed itself China Travel Service, which dealt with air, sea and land passenger ticket booking, running guest houses, organizing group tours, conducting overseas study business and releasing tourist publications. From then on, there successively appeared several Chinese travel agencies in Shanghai, however, China Travel Service was always the biggest, most credible and influential.

The shanghai Commercial Press also made significant contributions tourism promotion. In 1909, the press began publishing Guide to Shanghai, which quickly became an indispensable item for every tourist. In 1914, they started publishing Scenic China series. Each volume was compiled by using the photographs of on-site travelers, in-cluding Jiang Weiqiao(1873-1958), who contributed to Hengshan Mountain, Wutai Mountain, Putuo Mountain and Yandang Mountain Pan Deming, the First Hiker in China Pan Deming with members of the China Youth Asian Hiking Group in An’nan, present-day Vietnam

In 1930, Li Mengsheng helped establish the China Youth Asian Hiking Group. Pan Deming immediately joined up,though six months later all other members had left the group, leaving him as the only one. Whereas the group origi-nally planned to walk across Asia, Pan Deming decided to walk around the world, a trip that took him a full seven years.

During his travels he called upon the great Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore and Mahatma Gandhi and was received by the American President Roosevelt.

Officials from the Swedish consul met Einstein on the dock and informed him that he had won the Nobel Prize in physics. Eirin and his wife left for Japan on the same ship that evening at 9 pm. On December 31, the ening Einsteins returned to Shanghai on their way back to Europe and checked in to the Astor House Hotel(now Pujiang Hotel). They departed and got aboard the “Haruna Maru” on January 2, 1923.
