Size:cliff stone height of 340 cm,cliff stone width of 465cm rubbing copy of 55 sides,ink paper height of 41 cm and width of 27.5cm Stele for Zheng Wengong is located in Yunfeng Mountain,Ye County,Shandong Province.It was inscribed byZheng Daozhao to commemorate his father Zheng Xi,which is also called”Zheng Xi Monument”.A total of 51 lines are shown in every line,with at nost 29 characters(diameter of about 6 cm)every line.

Stele for Zheng Wengong is not only representative of Yunfeng Stone Carving,but also a model of round-stroke calligraphy in stele inscriptions of the Wei Dynasty.In the regular script style,this artwork absorbs stroke application of seal script,font structure of clerical script and charm of cursive script,and demonstrates unique style in the calligraphy of stele inscriptions of the Wei Dynasty.The round and stronglines and dignifed and large font structure all take comfortable manner,without revealing hidden edge.This artwork is seemingly calm and subtle,but in fact implies flying and imposing momentum.Under erosion over years,it is mottled and indistinct,which is filled with vigorous,simple and solemn atmosphere.

Zheng Daozhao(455-516)

As a calligrapher of the Northern Wei Dynasty,Zheng Daozhao was a native of Kaifeng(in today’s Henan).

30 stele inscriptions,including Stele for Zheng Wengong,feature strong,vigorous ad superior charms,which are classical stele inscriptions of the Wei Dynasty.

The Chinese character “Chen”makes clever use of interspersed strokes.

The suspended stroke is interspersed to occupy the right half of space, which looks very compact.

The turning point is vigorous and powerful.

“Hooking”and”Raising”strokes give a rugged feeling.

Yunfeng Stone Carving

Yunfeng Stone Carving is a group of stone carvings. In the Northern Wei Dynasty, calligrapher Zheng Daozhao and his son Zheng Shuzu left 48 ancient rock carvings in elegant writing style on Yunfeng Mountain, Taiji Mountain in Ye County, Tianzhu Mountain in Pingdu and Linglong Mountain in Qingzhou across Shandong Province. Among which,19 stone carvings on Yunfeng Mountain are the most prominent and famous. So descendants classify these artworks into”Yunfeng Stone Carving”. Yunfeng Stone Carving is dominated by round stroke in simple and profound style, which not only enjoys a high reputation in calligraphy history, but also a classic in stele inscriptions of the Wei Dynasty.
